North Georgia under snow advisory

UPDATE TO ADVISORY AND WINTER STORM WARNING.  The back edge of the snow and rain is moving to the east.  The snow is ending over north Georgia.  The rain is pushing out of Atlanta.

Potential accumulations are now up to 3-5 inches in parts of north Georgia.  Here are some snow reports:

Ellijay-5 inches

Union Co-3.5 inches

Blairsville-4 inches

Trenton-1 inch

Murray Co-1.5 inches

Lumpkin Co-2.5 inches

Hiawassee-1.5 inches

The winter storm has been extended until 10am Sunday.  The counties included are Murray, Gilmer, Fannin, Lumpkin, White, Towns, Union, and Rabun.

A winter weather advisory has been extended until 10am Sunday and includes more counties into the northern parts of metro Atlanta.  (See the NWS advisory below)

The moisture is moving out now.  Temps in Atlanta will stay above freezing.  Areas of north Georgia that are experiencing snow, will continue to have snow on the ground overnight.  There are many reports of accidents and slick conditions.

...WINTER STORM WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM EST SUNDAY...

* LOCATIONS...THE NORTHEAST GEORGIA MOUNTAINS.

* HAZARD TYPES...SNOW...POSSIBLY MIXED WITH SLEET.

* ACCUMULATIONS...3 TO 5 INCHES...WITH ISOLATED AMOUNTS UP TO 6
  INCHES. THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS WILL BE AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE 2500
  FEET.

* TIMING...MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW THROUGH MIDNIGHT...WITH LIGHT
  SNOW LASTING THROUGH 10 AM SUNDAY MORNING.

* IMPACTS...SNOW ACCUMULATING ON ROADWAYS WILL MAKE TRAVEL
  DANGEROUS. BLACK ICE WILL CONTRIBUTE TO TRAVEL PROBLEMS THROUGH
  SUNDAY MORNING.

* WINDS...NORTHWEST UP TO 5 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 20 MPH.

* TEMPERATURES...JUST BELOW FREEZING THIS EVENING...DROPPING TO THE
  MID AND UPPER 20S OVERNIGHT.

  ROME TO GAINESVILLE.

* HAZARD TYPES...SNOW...POSSIBLY MIXED WITH SLEET.

* ACCUMULATIONS...UP TO 1 INCH OF SNOW...WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS
  AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS.

* TIMING...LIGHT SNOW THROUGH MIDNIGHT...WITH BLACK ICE POSSIBLE
  THROUGH 10 AM SUNDAY MORNING.

* IMPACTS...LIGHT SNOW MAY CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES TONIGHT.
  AFTER THE SNOW ENDS...BLACK ICE MAY FORM CREATING ADDITIONAL
  TRAVEL PROBLEMS THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING.

* WINDS...WEST UP TO 5 MPH.

* TEMPERATURES...IN THE MID TO UPPER 30S THIS EVENING...DROPPING
  TO AROUND FREEZING TONIGHT.
