Scott Eugene Welker, 45, of Kennesaw attempted to flee the scene after crashing into an APD patrol car.
ATLANTA--An Atlanta Police officer is in serious condition after being struck by a suspected drunk driver around 11:30 p.m Friday night.
Officer Osbert Beckles was working traffic duty near I-75, at Northside Parkway, when his patrol car was struck by a 2011 Hyudai Sonata traveling northbound.
Beckles had to be cut from his patrol car before being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. He is suffering from head and chest injuries, along with multiple broken bones.
The driver of the Hyundai, Scott Eugene Welker, 45, of Kennesaw, fled the scene on foot and was arrested a short time later. He is in the Fulton County jail facing numerous charges, including DUI, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
During his first court appearance Saturday afternoon, it was revealed Welker is currently serving probation on federal wire-fraud charges. He's been convicted of forgery in two other states. He denied he was trying to flee the accident scene.
"Your honor, [the accident] happened on the off-ramp, I was just walking to the end of the off-ramp."
Welker's bond is set at $58,000.
