ATLANTA -- Parents know you can't make kids eat anything they don't want to eat.

Imagine trying to convince hundreds of kids not only to eat, but to eat what's good for them.

The federal government estimates uneaten school lunch food costs taxpayers a whopping $600 million a year

The formal term is plate waste, and one Cherokee County school is doing something to curb it.

Macedonia Elementary plays music during lunch to cut down on chatter and get kids to focus on eating.

"You're just being mindful of it's time to eat, I'm hungry, I'm ready to eat," said GSU grad student Jessie Gall.

She compared Macedonia with Woodstock Elementary, which doesn't have the music breaks, and found kids threw away less food at Macedonia.

"It's something the schools can do and it's affordable," she said. "It's completely free."
