ATLANTA - Officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation said Thursday they had approved for bidding a project to place variable speed limit signs along the northern half of I-285.

In conjunction with the project, the speed limit on the southern half of the highway -- what officials said was the lesser congested portion of the highway -- would go up to 65 mph.

Bill Goldberg with GDOT says that if an approved bid comes in, the speeds could change along the roadway as soon as late spring 2013.

Goldberg said that until the entire project was completed, however, the speed limit on the Perimeter would remain 55 mph for the entire highway.
