TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gary Hilton is appealing his conviction and death sentence in one of his murder cases.

The drifter was convicted of killing two women, including Georgia resident Meredith Emerson, and an elderly North Carolina couple. Emerson and the other woman, Cheryl Dunlap, were beheaded. All four victims were killed in forested areas.

The Florida Supreme Court heard Hilton's appeal on Thursday in Dunlap's death. The 46-year-old Crawfordville, Fla., nurse was killed in the Apalachicola National Forest.

Hilton is also serving a life sentence in Georgia, where he pleaded guilty to killing Emerson, a 24-year-old University of Georgia graduate.

He also pleaded guilty to ambushing and killing John and Irene Bryant, both in their 80s, while they were hiking in a national forest, in exchange fro another life sentence.
