WINDER, Ga. -- A historic Winder church has cancelled Sunday services after a fire gutted the more-than-century old building early Friday.

Sancturary of the Holy Spirit Pastor Phillip Adair said at least one other church has offered the congregation temporary meeting space.

Church members will come together for a closed meeting Saturday night, but they decided to let everyone stay home with their families this Sunday. They compared losing the building, which had recently undergone seven years of painstaking renovations, to the death of a loved one.

The Sancturary of the Holy Spirit was the first brick church in Winder. There has been so much interest in it since Friday's fire that church leaders said their website crashed Saturday. They've contacted their Internet service provider to increase bandwith.

The church has also decided to set up an account to help with the rebuilding process. No details are yet available.
