ATLANTA -- DeKalb County Police have released a more detailed account of the arrest of former Atlanta Falcons running back Jamal Anderson on DUI charges.

According to the police report, an officer noticed Anderson's Cadillac Escalade idling at the intersection of Chamblee-Tucker Road and I-85 with the former Falcons star apparently asleep at the while.

The officer says he tried repeatedly and unsuccessfully to wake Anderson up. Eventually, the officer says he boxed Anderson's SUV between two patrol cars and reached through the open sun roof to unlock the car.

The report says Anderson was arrested after he failed a field sobriety test and refused breathalyzer.

Anderson was booked into the DeKalb County Jail and released later Sunday after posting bond.

Anderson has hired defense attorney Michael Hawkins to represent him. Hawkins says his client was extremely tired but not drunk at the time of his arrest.

In a prepared statement, Hawkins writes, "It appears that Mr. Anderson was tired after a long day of travel, spending time with his children, and visiting with out-of-town friends. He was not, however, driving under the influence of alcohol."

The statement continues, "He will enter a plea of Not Guilty if the charges are filed in court."

Anderson played eight seasons for the Falcons before leaving with a knee injury in 2001.

He will be back in court for an arraignment on September 6.
