SUWANEE, Ga. -- Gwinnett County Police have determined that a BB gun was used to kill a family of swans in a Suwanee neighborhood.

Several residents of the Rosemoore Lake subdivision purchased the swans several years ago to combat the number of geese, but neighbors in the quickly adopted them as pets.

HOA President Michelle Sutton said the swans were particularly of interest this spring.

"We have been feeding and caring for the adult pair and were so excited to see that they had six fuzzy babies," Sutton said. "They were so adorable to see swimming in the lake and visiting us each day."

Police said on Friday, someone shot and killed all eight swans. A resident discovered the carcasses in a creek below the lake.

Sutton said later a resident close to where the swans were found said he found the dead adult female swan in his yard and he buried it.

Police said they collected possible evidence from the scene.

In the meantime, neighbors like Marilyn King have a number of  questions including why someone would be firing a gun in a subdivision full of children.

"Kids play all around the area where those swans were shot," King said. "What if a stray bullet were to hit a child?"

This isn't the first time residents have lost a swan to something other than natural causes. As many as three have been killed over the last few years, but police never found the people responsible.

As for purchasing more swans, most seem wary at this point.

"We were really attached to that swan family," Sutton said. "I don't know if I could go through this again."

If found, the shooter faces possible misdemeanor and/or felony animal cruelty charges.
