BUCHANAN, Ga. (WXIA) -- Two men have been arrested in connection with the Saturday murder of an 80-year-old man in the Haralson County town of Corinth.
The office of Haralson County Sheriff Eddie Mixon says Ophr Thompson was found dead in his home Saturday evening when a sheriff's deputy conducted a welfare check at his home on the behalf of relatives.
When the deputy arrived at Thompson's home, he found broken glass inside the home and several bullet rounds on the floor and the ledge. He found Thompson's body lying on the floor, bound by duct tape. Authorities said there was apparent blunt force trauma on the left side of Thompson's head.
Investigators said robbery was the likely motive behind the crime, saying weapons and a large sum of cash were taken from a safe inside the home. After talking with the victim's brother in law, investigators said Ronnie Lewis, 29, of Bremen had lived with Thompson previously -- and based on evidence found at the scene, investigators were led to conclude that Lewis was their suspect.
Lewis was picked up at his home in Buchanan and charged with murder, armed robbery, false imprisonment, aggravated battery on an elderly person, aggravated assault, theft by taking firearms and felony theft by taking.
Police said Mickey Mulder of Tallapossa, was an associate of Lewis'. Authorities took him into custody and charged him with theft by receiving and being a party to a crime.
