The former House speaker has scheduled several events in New York as he tries to capitalize on his surging poll numbers. An NBC News/Marist poll out Monday has Gingrich on top, Mitt Romney in second, and Ron Paul moving up in the Republican race for the White House.

Asked if his new strength in the GOP presidential contest was temporary or real, Gingrich said it was "up to the American people to decide."

He said he was meeting Trump to talk about job creation.

In his new 60-second Iowa ad, Gingrich says, "Working together, I know we can rebuild America."

Trump appeared on NBC's "Today" Monday morning, where he spoke with Matt Lauer about the 2012 presidential candidates, the upcoming Republican debate and the possibility that he will run again in four years.
