A 15-year-old Gwinnett County high school student died after collapsing during pre-season football conditioning drills Monday, police said.
The ninth-grader at Central Gwinnett High School, whose name was not released by police or school officials, told his coach he did not feel well due to nausea. Coaches say they told him to sit out practice, said Lawrenceville police Maj. Paul King.
After sitting for a while, he said he felt better and got in line to lift weights when the football players went to the weight room. Some time after the student got in line for bench press, he collapsed, Major King said.
The teen was pronounced dead at Gwinnett Medical Center. An autopsy was expected to be performed Wednesday to confirm his cause of death.
"All we know right now is he was standing beside a weight bench, very coherent," said Central Gwinnett High School head coach Bradley Warren. "Literally a split-second later, he was non-responsive."
Coaches administered CPR, Warren said, and then used a defibrillator in an attempt to revive the boy.
The teen was taking part in preseason conditioning drills to prepare for football tryouts, school officials said. He had not lifted any weights before he collapsed Monday, police said.
