ATLANTA -- An examination of traffic data shows an increase in accidents and injuries on I-75 in Cobb and Fulton County, including the downtown connector.

11Alive's Commuter Dude spent hours looking at crash data and questioned transportation leaders about efforts to reduce accidents.

In Cobb County, there were some 1,700 accidents last year, up slightly over the year before. On I-75 in Fulton County there were 2,300 accidents, four of them fatal.

The majority of those accidents took place where I-75 and I-85 come together-- the downtown connector. According to our examination there were just under 2,000 accidents there last year, nearly 400 more than the year before.

The number of fatalities on the connector was down, from two to one.

The Department of Transportation has toyed with the thought of closing some downtown ramps at certain hours, but the idea has been shelved for now.

The highway patrol has added troopers to I-75 in Cobb County to help reduce accidents there.
