AUSTELL, Ga. -- A Cobb County family says their home suffered significant damage when it was flooded with raw sewage.

When they said Cobb County was taking too long to fix the problem, they contacted 11Alive.

The family says there was as much as a foot of raw sewage in the house. The hardwood floors had to be pulled up, and they even had to clean underneath the house. They became concerned when they began to fear that the county might go back on their promise to make repairs to the home.

"There was raw sewage in the tub," said Leslie Riney.

Doug and Leslie Riney's dream home has turned into a nightmare in the past week and a half.

"This bathtub and the one in the master bathroom were both more than a third full of raw sewage," Leslie said.

A clogged sewer line caused raw sewage to back up into the Rainey's Austell home, blanketing the entire first floor in a foul smelling sludge.

The Rineys said Cobb County initially accepted responsibility for the clean-up and the repairs, but appeared to waver once the full extent of the amount of damage and the cost of the repair.

"We're just looking for the county to make it right," Leslie said.

11Alive News took their concerns directly to the county, who promised quick action.

"It's the county's practice, that when there's been a sewage leak in a house or a backup like that, that we will fix the problem, and that we'll make sure the family stays whole," said Cobb County spokesperson Robert Quigley.

The county has also offered to put the family up in an extended stay hotel while repairs are being made.
