It happened outside the fitness center on the church's campus, which is located on Woodrow Road in Lithonia.

Police said the DeKalb County Fugitive Squad was following 27 year-old Nicholas Wade, who had been charged in the beating death of an 18-month-old child, when Wade turned into the parking lot of the New Birth campus and stopped.

Investigators said Wade initially pointed a sawed-off shotgun at his own chin, then, after a moment, pointed the shotgun at officers. Wade fired one round, but no one was hurt. A DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputy opened fire, wounding Wade in his leg, face and neck.

He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta in stable condition.

Police said the church had no connection to Wade. Staff and students were allowed to leave the church campus shortly after the shooting.
