BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. -- A Georgia caregiver is accused of dropping off a patient at an Alabama hospital and stealing her money.
Investigators said 59-year-old Cathy Jean Thomas drove Edith Allen from Douglas County, Ga., to Blount County, Ala., north of Birmingham, and dropped her off at a hospital in 2010.
Allen, 68, has severe mental challenges and was sick and dehydrated. She was unable to speak or identify herself to hospital personnel.
Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey said Allen was treated "like an animal that was dropped off in front of the animal shelter."
"We don't treat humans like that. We can't treat humans like that," Casey said.
Investigators said Thomas is accused of taking $25,000 in Allen's Social Security benefits over the past three years. She is now in jail.
Police used fingerprints and facial recognition to identify Allen and piece together her past.
