Mariah Stackhouse preps for the U.S. Open.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- After achieving All American status as a freshman at Stanford University, the next goal for Mariah Stackhouse is a good showing at the U.S. Women's Open on Long Island.

Thursday's first round on that world stage won't be her first round in that atmosphere.  She qualified after her junior year at North Clayton high school, but hopes to gain from that first go round and perform better this time.

Stackhouse won just about every junior golf honor in the state of Georgia you can name, then pretty much had her choice of colleges due to her outstanding academic and athletic achievements.  She told 11Alive she never dreamed of being an All American so soon, since her immediate goal was simply adjusting to the rigors of practice plus classroom requirements.

Her dad caddied for her at the Open qualifier in California, which came about 2 days after she played in the NCAA tournament in Athens.  Stackhouse spent some time recently practicing on the fast greens at the Golf Club of Georgia, which come close to simulating U. S. Open conditions.
