Athens police officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian
ATHENS, Ga. -- The Buddy Christian Foundation, founded in memory of slain Athens police officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian, will mark two years since his death Friday afternoon at a memorial service at the Evergreen Memorial Park in Athens.
Suspect Jamie Hood, then suspected in a kidnapping and robbery, had been pulled over by Athens officer Tony Howard. Hood fired at Howard, wounding him, and then began to run from the scene. Police said Christian was approaching in his cruiser when Hood shot him to death.

A massive manhunt ensued during the following days, and resulted in Hood barricading himself in an Athens house for hours before surrendering before live television cameras.
The Buddy Christian Foundation plans a candlelight service in memory of Christian at Evergreen Memorial Park, 3655 Atlanta Highway in Athens, at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
