(WXIA) - Basketball forward John "J.J." Mann - a Smyrna native - was recently honored for his contributions to the community.

Mann is now part of the 2013 Allstate NABC Good Works Team, according to a spokeswoman for the organization. As part of the squad, he will have the opportunity to attend the 2013 NABC Convention and the 2013 NCAA Men's Final Four, as well as help out with a community project in Atlanta.

The spokeswoman said the honor aims at players' efforts off the court, next to so many honors that come from playtime. Mann was a three-year varsity letter winner at Marist High School. He has quite the list of community service accomplishments.

Mann has volunteered with the Best Buddies Program of Nashville. He makes visits to his mentee twice monthly.

Mann has tutored local elementary students, spoken to school bodies, served meals to the homeless through the Nashville Rescue Mission, led his basketball team in collecting donations and gifts for needy children during the holidays, and held basketball clinics in Italy on a mission trip.

The 10-member Allstate NABC Good Works Team was selected by former University of Arizona student-athlete, five-time NBA champion and college basketball analyst Steve Kerr, and a panel.
