ATHENS, GA - Officials in Athens said the childhood home of Jamie Hood burned shortly before noon Tuesday.

Fire officials said the home, which belonged to Hood's parents for more than 20 years, was a complete loss in the blaze. Officials said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Hood faces the death penalty for the shooting death of Athens-Clarke County Officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian and for wounding Officer Tony Howard in March, 2011. The shooting triggered a manhunt that ended when Hood surrendered before 11Alive News crews two nights later.

Though Hood has admitted to the shooting that cost Christian his life, the case against him remains in the preliminary stages. A formal arraignment is scheduled for January.
