DECATUR, Ga. -- The mayor of the City of Decatur has resigned, effective next month.

On Thursday, Mayor Bill Floyd submitted a letter of resignation to "pursue different professional opportunities" that he says will require a significant amount of time and attention.

Floyd was elected to the Decatur City Commission in 1991 and has served as mayor of the city since 1999. The commission will elect another mayor during  first meeting in January.

DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis credits Floyd for for transforming the Downtown Decatur area into a "vibrant live-work-play community."

According to Floyd, "Decatur is a wonderfully unique community and it has been an honor and a privilege to serve on the City Commission and to be Mayor."

His replacement as mayor is expected to be named on Monday, January 7, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.

The Commission will call a special election for March 19, 2013 to fill Floyd's City Commission seat.

Floyd will vacate his seat on January 7.
