(WXIA) -- With precious little information coming out about the upcoming "Star Trek Into Darkness", the first official movie poster was released on Monday.

The poster, which shows a damaged building in the shape of the famed Star Trek delta shield, shows the movie's villain, played by "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch, with his back to the camera, facing a skyline that looks suspiciously like the city of London.

The film's synopsis was released by Paramount last week:

"When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organiztion has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.

"As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew."

Some critics point out the similarity between the Into Darkness poster and the pre-release poster for The Dark Knight Rises last summer.

Star Trek Into Darkness is set to be released in May, 2013. The movie's first trailer is expected to be released when The Hobbit goes into theaters later this month.
