FLUSHING, N.Y. -- The UGA men's tennis team rounded out the fall portion of its 2012-13 season Sunday, wrapping up play at both the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in New York City as well as the Bulldog Scramble on the home courts in Athens.
Georgia's 35th-ranked doubles duo of Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland fell by a 6-4, 6-2 score in the finals at National Indoors to Duke's No. 2-seeded Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler. Unseeded in the main draw entering the event, the Bulldog tandem made waves in a field full of the nation's top teams by winning four matches - including one over the top seeds from Auburn yesterday - in reaching the championship match. They finish their fall with a record of 11-2.
Back in Athens at the annual Bulldog Scramble, Georgia started the day strong by winning two of three doubles matches on the final day of competition. The pair of junior Garrett Brasseaux and freshman Marco Nunez defeated Alabama's Stuart Kenyon and Brian Conlon, 8-6. The team of sophomores Eric Diaz and Nathan Pasha posted a win by the same score over the Tide's Rens van der Vis and Harris Barnard. In Georgia's other doubles match this morning, the team of Casey Kay and Will Oliver was knocked off by Mississippi State, 8-6.
In singles, Pasha stayed undefeated on the weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 win over ETSU's Rogerio Ribeiro. Brasseaux was also a winner, going 6-2, 7-6(4) over UK's Hirooka, while Diaz, Oliver, and Nunez suffered losses in their final outings. Diaz dropped his match 6-2, 6-2 to White of MSU while Oliver dropped a tough three-setter, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to Conlon of Alabama. Nunez fell 6-3, 6-1 to Gold of Kentucky.
The top players from each team then went on to a shoot-out round, where Pasha earned two more wins - over Barnard of Alabama and Gold of Kentucky - each by 10-3 scores - to come away with the Bulldog Scramble title.
Georgia will now take a two-month hiatus, returning in 2013 to open the spring with the National Collegiate Tennis Classic Jan. 18-21 in Palm Springs, Calif.
