(NBC NEWS) -- The National Football League and it's players are teaming up to donate $1 million to the American Red Cross.
NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell and NFLPA Director DeMaurice Smith announced the donations on Thursday afternoon.
The league says the funds will be directed toward Hurricane Relief efforts in the northeast after Hurricane Sandy.
The league in partnership with it's network broadcasters also plan to run ads to promote donations during this weekend's games beginning with tonight's game on the NFL Network.
It is estimated that the damage done by Hurricane Sandy could reach in upwards of $20 Billion dollars.
