WATKINSVILLE, Ga. -- Several hundred people attended an event in Oconee County to honor those who have received the Purple Heart military honor for being wounded or killed in combat.

The event Saturday at Oconee Veterans' Memorial Park included about 70 motorcycle riders who were participating in the annual Michael Boucher Ride. Boucher lost both his legs when wounded in Afghanistan in 2011.

One of those honored at Saturday's ceremony was wounded Marine Lance Cpl. Sean Adams. He lost both legs and several fingers as the result of an improvised explosive device explosion in Afghanistan.

Retired Maj. Gen. Don Lohmeier told the crowd that to receive the award the recipient must have been wounded by the enemy as determined by the commander in charge.
