MARIETTA, Ga. -- A Duluth man has been sentenced to life plus 47.5 years in prison for the murder of a Delta Air Lines flight attendant and the stabbing of her son.

Waseem Daker was 18 years old when prosecutors said he strangled 30-year-old Karmen Smith and stabbed her then 5-year-old son Nicholas in their East Cobb home in 1995. The boy survived.

Though police said Daker was a suspect all along, he wasn't arrested for Karmen Smith's murder until 2010.

He did, however, spend 10 years behind bars for a related case. In 1996, Daker was convicted of stalking the Smiths' upstairs neighbor, Loretta Spencer.

Daker was convicted in the Smiths' case on Friday.

He was sentenced to life in prison for murder plus 20 years for aggravated battery, 20 years for burglary, 5 years for false imprisonment and 2.5 years for aggravated stalking.
