WASHINGTON -- A major study finds that intervention by doctors can help reduce auto crashes involving older drivers.

The study, conducted in Canada, found fewer serious crashes when doctors warned patients and notified driving authorities.

It's estimated about 600,000 older drivers a year in the U.S. give up their keys because of health conditions.

The study is in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.
