Michael Haynes is getting ready for the AJC Peachtree Road Race.
I was inspired today. It happened while putting together a story for 11Alive's coverage of the AJC Peachtree Road Race.
Michael Haynes has been committed to lifting weights at the gym, logging miles on the treadmill and jogging in his Riverdale neighborhood. He's also been trying to eat healthy and starts every morning with oatmeal.
That's pretty standard fare ahead of a big athletic event. But for the 44-year-old, July 4th is so much more than just a 10K. Last year, on Independence Day, the father of three was in a hospital bed watching the race on TV. He just had a heart transplant. This year, Michael will be one of 60,000 people at the start line. Obviously, after learning Michael's story, I'm out of excuses. So are you, if you're questioning whether you can make it 6.2 miles!
If you see Michael along the race course, be sure to cheer him on! Better yet, congratulate him after he crosses the finish line!
