LIMA, Peru -- Joran van der Sloot was sentenced Friday to 28 years in prison after pleading guilty to the 2010 murder of a Peruvian woman he met at a casino in Lima.

The murder took place exactly five years to the day after the disappearance of American teen Natalee Holloway in Aruba.

Van der Sloot, 24, remains the main suspect in that case.

With credit for time served, van der Sloot's sentence would end June 10, 2038. He was also ordered to pay about $74,500 to the family of murder victim Stephany Flores.

Prosecutors had asked judges for the maximum possible 30 year sentence for van der Sloot. The defense claimed the killing was manslaughter, which carries a minimum sentence of five years. Van der Sloot's guilty plea was aimed at winning a lighter sentence.

In court Wednesday in Peru, van der Sloot said he is "truly sorry" for Flores' death. He said he had "wanted from the first moment to confess sincerely" to the killing.

His lawyer told the court that van der Sloot killed Flores as a result of "extreme psychological trauma" he had suffered from the fallout over the Holloway case.

In a confession, he had said he killed her in a fit of rage after she discovered on his laptop that he'd been linked to the Holloway disappearance.

But prosecutors said he killed her to rob her after learning she had won money at the casino where they met.
