'Rock Center' examines APS cheating scandal

ATLANTA -- A national light will be shown upon the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal on Monday night's edition of Rock Center with Brian Williams.

When things went well for Atlanta Public Schools, Dr. Beverly Hall got much of the credit. But after a 10 month-long probe into alleged test tampering uncovered the largest school cheating scandal in American history, it was found that teachers and administrators were behind the cheating.

Investigators appointed by former Gov. Sonny Perdue uncovered evidence of wrongdoing that has created fallout that will follow the school system and those involved for years to come.

NBC's Harry Smith takes a closer look at the scandal and talks to a number of people involved in the scandal, including former school board president Khaatim El.

Also on Monday's Rock Center, Kate Snow looks at middle-and-working class families driven below the poverty line by the faltering US economy. Thousands of households are forced to rely on government food assistance to make ends meet.

For many households, it's a real struggle to keep it together. Midnight food runs on the first day of each month are becoming more common place as families find themselves at Walmart and other 24-hour supermarkets waiting for the stroke of midnight, when funds hit their assistance accounts.
