NORCROSS, Ga. -- A 20-year-old man has died after an officer-involved shooting near a Norcross apartment complex.

Cpl. Jake Smith with Gwinnett County Police Department said three officers from the gangs unit were patrolling "an area where gangs are known to operate" at about 9 p.m. Wednesday when they saw three "suspicious males" walking in the dark. They were in the middle of Singleton Road, near the JSD Apartments off Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

When the officers tried to approach the males, Smith said two of them took off and 20-year-old Darryl Fuller pulled a gun out from his waistband.

"The officers identified themselves as police and ordered the suspect to drop his weapon," Smith said in a statement. "The suspect ran onto the sidewalk, turned and pointed his gun at the officers. One officer fired one shot, which struck the suspect in the head."

Fuller later died at a local hospital.

The officer who fired his gun has been put on administrative leave pending a standard internal investigation.
