Laura Dyar, age 27, of Watkinsville
MADISON, Ga. -- Laura Dyar apparently committed her life to teaching children and now she is in jail accused of sexually assaulting one of her students. The student's guardian is also in jail for trying to make money off of the alleged crime.
Dyer teaches eighth graders at Morgan County Middle School in Madison. According to the schools website she was a featured teacher for the month of October. She is also the coach of the middle schools cheerleading squad.
Dyar is being held at the Morgan County Jail, where she is charged with having sexual contact with one of her students. A joint investigation by Madison Police, the Morgan County Sheriff Office and the GBI led to charges of Child Molestation, Enticing a Minor and Sexual Assault.
As bad as that sounds, the student's legal guardian is also under arrest for failing to protect the child. We are not identifying the guardian to protect the identity of the student. The GBI said investigators found she tried to make money off of the child's trauma. "They uncovered information that the guardian had attempted to extort money from the teacher by saying she wouldn't turn her in if she gave her money," said GBI spokesperson John Bankhead.
The female guardian is charged with two counts of Theft by Extortion, and one count of Criminal Intent to Commit Theft by Extortion.
Laura Dyar turned herself in after a special agent with the GBI's Milledgeville Office obtained a warrant for her arrest. The child's guardian was arrested earlier and both are being held at the Morgan County Jail.
