The big question we're getting from viewers is must I file my census form by April 1.
As one 11Alive viewer put it, "I thought they were due by April 1. What's the deal?"
The deal is they are not due on that date.
It's a day to set a benchmark, a point of reference. Right now Georgia has 47 percent of its forms returned; while Metro Atlanta has 45 percent.
As Marilyn Stephens, the Assistant Director for the Metro Atlanta Census Bureau said: "Census Day is unlike tax day. It's not a deadline to say I have to have my questionnaire in by April 1. That's the snapshot day. All through the month of April our message is fill it out and mail it back, because if you don't mail it back in April, on May 1, someone will come knocking at your door."
But before that, you can request a form be mailed to you by calling the national Telephone Questionaire Assistance Center at 1-866-872-6868. Starting on April 12, if you still have not received your census form or haven't mailed it back, you can request a phone interview instead, according to a Census spokeswoman.
Go to www.2010census.gov for telephone numbers and other important information.
If you don't, expect a knock at the door by a census taker during early May.
