ATLANTA -- Thousands of people across the country are getting free tax preparation help from the United Way and several other nonprofit groups this year. "We are helping people in the community with their taxes free of charge and helping them get the refunds they have earned," said Atlanta Center for Working Families spokeswoman Olivia Alston.
Taxpayers who make less than $49,00 annually can go to various community centers across metro Atlanta where trained tax preparers will help them through the process of finding new credits and deductions. "There lots of tax credits. We don't want anything left on the table and we want people to file their taxes for free. There is no need to pay hundreds of dollars for that service," said United Way spokeswoman Josephine Robinson.
United Way, the Wal-Mart Foundation, One Economy Corporation and the National Disability Institute are teaming up for the tax preparation. They hope to save Americans a total of one billion dollars.
For those who prepare their own tax return, myfreetaxes.com and thebeehive.org offer free online tax preparation software for people who make under $58,000 annually.
The I.R.S has a list of companies that offer free tax software as well though lot of them do charge a fee for state tax returns.
