JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) -- New Clayton County Sheriff Kem Kimbrough kept his campaign promise to clean up the department on his first day in office by firing 14 deputies.

Some of the fired deputies said they were targeted because of their connection to outgoing Sheriff Victor Hill.

Kimbrough said Hill "hired outcasts, thugs and rejects from every agency." He said he instituted a new code of conduct built on the foundations of integrity and honesty.

On his first day in office, Hill fired 34 deputies and posted snipers on the courthouse roof as he escorted them out of the building.

The county spent more than $7 million to settle lawsuits arising from the action.
