Halloween Pumpkin Carving Kit

SANDY SPRINGS -- If you're looking to carve Halloween pumpkins with the kids, you probably don't want them using a butcher knife.

"We used them in the past," said Kristina Burns, an 8th grader at Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic School in Sandy Springs. "My Dad would be the only one who touches them."

To get everyone in on the fun you have probably considered those pumpkin carving kits with the saw style knifes that offer more safety.

So we picked up the Deluxe Pumpkin Carving Kit by Amscan. It includes two ergonomically designed carving tools, an etching tool, a scoop and 12 stencils. It is recommended for children eight and up.

We also got the Pumpkin Masters Kid's Carving Kit that contains a carving tool, scraper, stencils, four set of plastic eyes and a crayon. This kit is recommended for children six and older.

Both kits sell for less than $10.

Kristina teamed up with fellow student Teddy Caito to see if the kits make pumpkin carving safe and fun.

"I was just thinking of a classic eyes and scary mouth," said Teddy as he picked out the perfect stencil.

Kristina opted for a scary ghost. Then they picked their tools and got to work creating their masterpieces on their own.

Things got a little slippery and very messy, but they weren't complaining. A half hour later the results were pretty good.

The kids said the carving tool worked well and we are happy to say there were no injuries or cuts.

"I think they were good other than hands and stencils getting wet," said Teddy. "But I think you could avoid that with some paper towels."

Kristina was proud of her ghost which had some fine details like fingers and eyes, something she could never have attempted with a kitchen knife.

"This one was pretty easy," she said. "The hands were hard. You've got to cut it out by sections and use your artistic ability to carve it."

Teddy and Kristina said to make a great pumpkin, definitely pick up one of these kits.

"For the pumpkin carving kits," they said, "we give it two thumbs up."
