  • ACWORTH, Ga -- Blake Blomquist takes his dog to work every day. That's because his 2-year old Jack Russell terrier works with him. His name is "Rogue" and he is DEA certified as a drug sniffing dog.

Blomquist and Rogue are a team and work for a company called Discreet K9. Blomquist said he came up with the idea for the company when a friend's 17 year old daughter died from a drug overdose. "One of the main things that resounded through the whole process was he looked back on it and just said 'I didn't know what to do,'" Blomquist said.

He thinks Rogue can help parents like his friend to seek intervention before it's too late. "When a parent can get that proof it gives them a lot of power to get and intervention and to stop what's happening," he said.

Rogue is trained to sniff out marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin. He can be hired for businesses and private schools. "If an employee has an injury as a result of another employee using drugs, that business is liable," Blomquist said. "There's not better message to send to your pool of employees than to bring a dog in on a very sporadic unannounced basis."

Typically when you think of drug sniffing dogs you think of a German Shepherd like police departments use. "I wanted a small breed canine just because he's so unobtrusive, he's not going to send chills up mama's back when I bring him through the kitchen to go upstairs to check the kids room," Blomquist said.

Rogue's reward is a green squeaky ball. "It's like a long distance love affair because he doesn't hardly ever see it but when he does it's just so much fun for him," Blomquist said.

Blomquist sees a bigger reward. "Working with a dog and having that bond with him and doing good, it's a good feeling," he said. "As a result of what he's done I've seen good changes happen for kids."
