Help Desk: Protecting Yourself From Telephone Scams

Though creditable telemarketers follow the rules, scammers do not and the 11Alive Help Desk wants you to be aware of these scams.

Telephone scams are becoming more and more common these days. Do not depend on your caller ID for the legitimacy of a phone call. New technology now makes it easier for telephone numbers to be faked. Be careful not to do business with a company that is calling at inappropriate times. When faced with a telemarketer's phone call, the Consumer Federation of America suggests to be sure that they are first calling between the hours of 8:00 a.m- 9:00 p.m. Any sales calls before or after those times are not allowed. 

Your name or any other form of information that you give to scammers can be a technique they use to put you in danger.
Be sure to ask the person on the phone to mail you information in regards to what they are calling for. In addition, check with the Better Business Bureau to check the validity of a company's website and ask for references.

The Federal Trade Commission also recommends that you keep your credit card, checking account, or Social Security numbers to yourself. Do not share information to callers whom you do not know, even if they ask you to "confirm" the information.

Most importantly, be sure not to send cash by messenger, overnight mail, or money transfer. If you use cash or wire money opposed  than using a credit card, you may lose your right to dispute fraudulent charges.

If you've received a call that you think might be from a scammer, report the incident to the FTC by calling its consumer hot line at 877-FTC-HELP (877-382-4357).
