ATLANTA -- It's the start of prom season and the most important thing for parents is getting children to and from the prom safely and not cutting any corners.

Parents must do their homework and make the Georgia Department of Public Safety their first stop.

RESOURCE GUIDE | Hiring a limo for prom

"They need to look at the safety of the vehicle and the safety of the driver. They need to know that new applicants who apply for limo carrier or bus carrier authority to the Georgia Department of Public Safety go through an extensive process of more than 20 steps," said Capt. Johnny Jones, Executive Officer of the Compliance Division of the Ga. Dept. of Public Safety.

"We make sure that the drivers of the limos are medically qualified to operate them and we make sure they have the appropriate drivers license and endorsements to drive them," he added.

You can always check that the company is listed as a legal company. If they are not listed, stay as far away from them as you can, said Jeffrey Greene, President of Greene Custom Limousines, Atlanta.

Personal inspections and a guarantee of insurance should top your checklist.

"I would actually go to their facilities. I want to see how you operate," Greene said.

"Ask for a Certificate of Insurance and have their agent send it to you," he added.

And when it comes to leaving a deposit, use a credit card.  It helps you guard against the limo not showing up or a substitute that you didn't order.   You can quickly stop or dispute payment with your credit card company.
