Help Desk: MLK Days of Service in Atlanta

Reporters from 11Alive News traveled the beats in Atlanta today to witness various group events taking place for the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service Observance.

While the Day of Service is officially slated for the 21st of January, the outreach of various organizations go beyond today's date as schools, non-profits, churches, and organizations rally to provide service in their community.

Volunteers from all over Atlanta rolled up their shirt sleeves to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, and his legacy of helping other people.

The popular service day was initiated on King's Birthday and was reminiscent of his infamous quote, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"

Hands on Atlanta, offers a great place to begin your commitment to service. They offer a wide array of service sites so that you can volunteer for something you really enjoy doing. This year, more than 3,000 volunteers have signed up to participate to provide services to local communities. From 5K runs to Food Banks to cards and crafts, you are likely to find a volunteer opportunity that begs for your help.

The City of Decatur is ready to repair, and provide maintenance to the City of Decatur senior homeowners. "The Project" an annual event, allow seniors who reside in their homes and meet certain income criteria, the opportunity to receive repairs and maintenance free of charge on their homes. This year, there were major repairs done on 17 homes, minor maintenance repairs on 9 other homes, and yard clean-up on 26 homes to date. Funding is provided by grants, corporate sponsors, community organizations and other non-profit organizations. The Rotary Club and local Churches often participate through donations or service, as well.

Allstate's National "Give Back Day" program initiated their service program in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., for the 5th year. Allstate, along with House Proud Atlanta, provided services to senior citizen Jesse James whose home was in need of maintenance and repair and essentially, prepared the home for the cold winter months.
