CONYERS, Ga. -- After more than a week at Grady Hospital, the mother of 4 children killed in a tragic Conyers fire earlier this month has been released.

She now faces an uncertain future and is in seclusion and not speaking to the media.

Fire Officials say Reeba Glass had no working smoke alarms in her home at the time of the fire.

To make sure this tragedy does not happen again, our 11Alive Help Desk partnered with First Alert to get new smoke alarms into as many Metro Atlanta homes as possible.

The effort started in Conyers as Rockdale Fire-Rescue Teams canvassed neighborhood homes.

The Team started on Pinedale Circle where the fire occurred and were shocked by a discovery made in an apartment right next door to where the children died.

They took the old smoke detector off the wall and could not believe it.

"We found that it was manufactured in 1998 and was over 10 years old. When we took the detector off the wall, there was no battery in it," said Michael Morris of Rockdale Fire/Rescue.

To make sure homes throughout Metro Atlanta have new alarms or existing ones with new batteries, the 11Alive Help Desk has partnered with First Alert to secure 5-thousand free smoke alarms that are now available to County Fire Departments, and through them to homeowners.

Getting two of those alarms, another next door neighbor on Pinedale Circle, Rosa Daniel.

What she saw next door on the night of January 8th was an alarming wake up call.

"It was really close to home because I knew them and it meant I had to take extra precautions for protection and to make sure that my home was safe," Daniel said.

"To me it's very important because I have had two fires in my apartment, not this one," Daniels added.

Working smoke detectors and knowing how to get out of the house in case of fire are top priorities for homeowners, County and City Fire Departments and the 11Alive Help Desk.

The goal--every home and family protected.
