WXIA -- As winter is slowly creeping up on us and with the weather changing, many of us turn to our fireplaces to help keep warm.

However, with 36% of residential house fires every year caused by heating fires, 11Alive's Help Desk wants to share with you some tips to help keep you and your family safe.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, the best way to prevent a fire from occurring in your fireplace is to make sure your chimney or wood stove has had an annual inspection.

Also make sure debris and flammable materials around the fireplace are cleared.

Flammable liquids should never be used to start a fire indoors and if you plan on using seasoned wood pellets make sure to only burn dry ones.

To help protect your home from the inside, make sure that your smoke alarms are working properly by testing them every month.
