Help Desk helps Hampton homeowner dodge foreclosure

HAMPTON, Ga. -- Keeping homeowners in their homes and out of foreclosure is a focus of the 11Alive Help Desk.

It's a life-changing issue now faced by one in every 430 Georgia homeowners.

Our Help Desk asked our viewers to let us know if we could help you get action on speeding up your mortgage modification or refinance, or in simply getting banks to listen to you.

We got more than 150 emails.

One was a homeowner in Hampton.

Cindy Davis and her husband work full time jobs and multiple shifts just to keep up with their mortgage.

But no matter how hard they've worked, they find themselves on the verge of falling behind, and possibly losing their Hampton home.

Now time is everything.

"If (the mortgage modification) doesn't close and we don't make the payment in December, (Chase Bank) will not refinance because we will be behind and we will face foreclosure," Davis said. "We will lose the house, as plain and simple as that."

"It's taking too long," she added. "We can't afford to spend every cent we have waiting to get this mortgage to close."

Davis says Chase Bank first offered her an interest rate cut last August and now says they are short of staffers and cannot give her a closing date.

"We need to go ahead and get this done. 'We are going to call you just as soon as we get a closing date' and then you never hear from them," Davis said.

Frustrated at getting nowhere, Davis got in touch with our 11Alive Help Desk.

"I heard from you right away, which was so cool and you have worked wonders," she said.

We wasted no time in contacting Chase Bank right away, pressing for an immediate closing date.

Within a few days, Chase got back to us with a firm date set before the end of the month.

It will take the Davis family into December saving $300 a month, cutting their monthly payments to below $600, and also lowering their interest rate.

"That extra $300 a month is not going to put us on easy street, but it certainly is going to make things a lot easier than they have been," Davis said.

For her, it was a sigh of relief.

"Without you I don't think it ever would have happened. I really don't," Davis said.
