Consumer complaints bring quick responses

ATLANTA -- Consumers, by the thousands, are complaining to a new government agency about everything from credit cards to auto loans.

And the agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is making sure the banks are doing something about it.

The 11Alive Help Desk wants to be sure you know how to reach them and get action.

Since the bureau started last year, it's logged in more than 45,000 consumer complaints on everything from credit cards to student loans. They now have a database spotlighting credit card complaints and the banks involved.

The 11Alive Help Desk has found that topping the list are disputes with billing, credit reporting, charges for late fees, and concerns about ID theft.

The banks getting those complaints include JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Capital One and Citibank.

To submit a complaint, visit the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau website and submit your complaint. 

Once one the site, select the area where you are having a problem: credit cards, mortgages, bank accounts or bank services, auto, consumer or student loans.

The bureau says banks have 15 days to respond to a complaint and 60 days to address your specific problem. However, banking lobby groups are questioning whether all the complaints the bureau is getting are valid. 

The bureau counters by saying consumers must attest to the accuracy of what they submit.
