SOCHI, Russia -- The mother of local Olympian Kyle Carr arrived in Russia just in time to see her son's team hit the ice.

Thanks to generous donations, Lisa Cervantes was able to make it to Russia to see her son compete. After four flights over 30 hours, she was excited to see the natural beauty of Sochi.

"Oh my gosh, it's beautiful. It is so beautiful," she said. "I love the mountains, the snow-capped mountains are just gorgeous."

Olympic Park rolled out the performing carpet for Lisa and her daughter Emme.

Amidst all the cacophony, there was some disappointing news about Kyle.

"They made the decision today that Kyle will skate the final but he will not skate the semifinal tomorrow," Cervantes said.

Carr is part of the four-man relay in the men's 5,000 meters, but there are five men on the team. For all five to get medals, all five must skate.

"As a selfish mom, I want to see him do everything. I've never Kyle skate so fast, so strong, so confidant and so well," Cervantes said.

Carr's team is coming into the Olympics ranked number 1 in the world, so Lisa is praying that Friday's semifinals go well so that she can see her son skate in the finals next week. In the meantime, after a lifetime as a mom of an athlete, Lisa is letting it soak in.

"We were walking around today going, 'Emme, can you believe we're here. Kyle is an Olympian, and we are at the Olympics,' she said. "This is crazy. This is crazy."
