WXIA -- All this week here on 11Alive, you'll hear us talking about the American Cancer Society's push to get volunteers for our generation's Cancer Prevention Study.

The Cancer Society needs 300,000 volunteers. Atlanta's share is 5,000.

11Alive is committed to helping recruit those volunteers in honor of our loved ones and co-workers who have battled the disease and for our children's children to live in a cancer free world.

CPS stands for cancer prevention study; it's the third study. The first was a few generations ago and it found the link between smoking and cancer. CPS 2 found links between obesity and cancer.

If you volunteer, you will fill have blood drawn, your waist measured and fill out a questionnaire, then fill out another questionnaire every three years or so for the next 20 to 30 years. That simple deed could help find a cure for cancer.

The study is open to anyone who:
-Is willing to make a long-term commitment to the study, which involves completing periodic follow-up surveys at home
-Is between 30 and 65 years old
-Has never been diagnosed with cancer (not including basal or squamous cell skin cancer)
