CUMMING, Ga  --About twenty 11 and 12 year olds are playing the game Minecraft  and engrossed in the building and breaking action.

They're oblivious to anything around them.

Best of all, they're in math class.

"I never thought that we would play something like Minecraft at a real class at school," said one student.

Math Literacy teacher, Mitch Brotherton, at Otwell Middle School spent last summer creating this project, not because he was into this game, but he saw his students playing it.

This is gaming with a goal.

"We've basically taken the common core standards and incorporated them into this game world," Said Brotherton.

The students are building rollercoasters and more.

"It's almost like a math theme park," said Brotherton. Z" (The) rollercoasteris going to go through different math.   (Students can put in ) a coordinate plane  Y axis and this is his X axis."

Math Literacy teacher, Mitch Brotherton, spent last summer creating this project - not because he was into this game.

He's never played it, but his students are crazy about the game.

"I saw a lot of kids playing on it and I decided to go out on a limb and build a coordinate plan on minecraft," said Brotherton.

This project is the end game -so to speak -after they've mastered math material and researched it.

"I like it because it's a different way to do math," said

"I understand it way more when I do things like this." said

"It shows me better exclamation of how things look like and how it's done in math. Like with the coordinate plane, and the number line. It's easier that it is, because I can see it."   .
