ATLANTA -- The Fulton County School system announced that 108 students have been named semifinalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The highest number of students in Fulton County history, according to Samantha Evans of Fulton County Schools, will continue in the competition for 8,300 Merit Scholarships, valued at about $32 million.
Evans said that as juniors, students took the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Recognition comes from exceptionally high scores on the exam.
In order to become finalists, students must maintain high academic performance, be endorsed and recommended by their school leadership and score high enough on the SAT to confirm their previous qualifying test performance.
Students must also submit an essay describing themselves, and details on their participation and leadership in school and community activities.
Finalists will be announced in the winter, and winners will be announced next spring.
