The officer tried to stop Farino, a foot chase ensued around the back of the grocery store and the suspect got around the building and back to where the police car was sitting.
Farino jumped into the car and tried to run over the officer, who fired at the car and hit the suspect multiple times.
Farino drove up Highway 92 in the officer's car. Police stopped it near Neese Road. Farino was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta with life-threatening injuries. He is still in the hospital Wednesday morning.
Baker said Farino has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, motor vehicle theft, interference with government property, fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving and obstruction in Tuesday's incident. He already faced charges in Woodstock and Gwinnett County.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the shooting investigation.
