  • DECATUR, Ga. -- A burglary suspect is probably thinking he chose the wrong home to break into after he was shot by the homeowner.

The burglary happened at a home on Longshore Cove in Decatur Monday afternoon. Police said it was the second time the home was broken into in five days.

The homeowner was driving home for lunch when he found out someone had entered his house.

"The homeowner got a call from his alarm company that his alarm had gone off while driving home," said DeKalb County Police Capt. Stephen Fore.

The homeowner told police when he got home he walked to the back of the house and saw three suspects inside. Capt. Fore said he called 911.

"As he was on the phone with 911, the three suspects exited the rear of his home and ran toward him," Capt. Fore. "At that point he pulled out a personal firearm and fired, striking one of the suspects."

Two of the suspects got away, but the man who was shot was arrested in the neighborhood and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.

Keith Dennard lives across the street from the home that was burglarized.

"I'm very disturbed about it," Dennard said. "I guess I need to secure my house more and go out and purchase a gun for protection."

The homeowner said he did not want to be interviewed by reporters. Police said there is nothing to indicate the homeowner did anything illegal, and he will likely not be charged.

    Dennard backed his neighbor's actions.

"I feel like he did the right thing," he said. "If somebody was in his house he doesn't know exactly what they might try to do to him so he's got to protect his own house."
