DECATUR, Ga. -- Decatur police have arrested the grandson of an elderly woman who died after being attacked in her home.
The assault happened shortly before midnight Tuesday at a house on Cambridge Avenue.
Decatur police said the victim, 75-year-old Shirley Kendrick, was stabbed and suffered a head injury. She was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Decatur Police Sgt. Jennifer Ross said Kendrick's son and husband both tried to stop the attack. The husband received minor injuries and was treated at the scene, while the husband suffered major but non-life-threatening injuries.
The grandson was identified as 23-year-old Marquis La'Vonta Freeman. He was charged with murder, battery and aggravated assault.
Police have not yet released a motive in the attack.
